136 High Street Irchester

The garden group made a welcome return to 136 High St Irchester in July, where Ade and Jane Parker have created a magnificent garden of many areas. It is remarkable to think that this was a field as recently as 20 years ago, such is the transformation. Starting with the area next to their house, which they built and the commercial nursery business that they were involved with, the garden has progressively come to life. Ade said that there was no grand plan, it just evolved.

A summerhouse overlooks borders planted with a good selection of late summer flowering herbaceous and other plants with year round interest. Another seating arbour is hidden away by trees and large shrubs to create the perfect retreat.

There are various different planting habitats including areas designed for shade, sun and pollinator friendly sites. A wildlife pond attracts a large range of birds, insects and other creatures into the garden. There are Alpine houses, planted stone sinks and raised beds together with seasonally planted tubs adding bold summer foliage and colour.
The most recent transformation is a wildflower meadow, started some 3 years ago. A path had been mowed through and around the meadow to enable a closer look to be had.

Perhaps the most important creation is “a loo with a view” (pictured on left), perfectly placed at the end of the garden for those who wished to avail themselves of the facility.

There was a choice of plants for sale, all nurtured by the owners which many took advantage of – all at a very reasonable price.

As ever, a garden visit is not complete without tea and cake, which was provided by our hosts. With a plentiful selection of cakes to choose from, everyone could find something to their taste to tuck into to conclude another successful visit.                                                                                                                                                 Ann & Clive Tyrrell
