You know that song “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head”?
Well, that was most definitely the case this morning when 15 intrepid members of the LH group met with Terry Wenham who guided us around various interesting parts of Abington Park – especially mentioning the memorial to Edgar Mobbs and the Mobbs Own regiment as well as the stories of two Victoria Cross recipients. We were able to shelter in the Bandstand at one point where Terry told us about the homecoming celebrations for many of the WW1 and WW2 heroes, when thousands of people would gather for official gatherings around the bandstand. We did, of course, also visit “Tanky Hill” and hear the stories about the tank and guns that were on display for many years before being cut up for scrap in Sheffield! So our cutlery may be made from tank steel – who knows? We ended up in the churchyard to hear some more stories of war heroes, including two of the Crockett & Jones shoe manufacturer’s Crockett family members. There are several CWG commission grave markers in the churchyard which are equally interesting.
Thank goodness for the bandstand – and all the trees in the park where we could shelter!
