On December 5th 14 members of the Science & Technology group met to hear from Colin Rowe about Rocket Technology covering the history starting in the 1930s in Germany where at the seaside village of Peenemunde on the Baltic coast the first V2 rocket to enter space would be launched in October 1943. Occurring simultaneously at the same site was the V1 flying bomb known as the “doodlebug” which stopped and fell out of the sky at a timed point from launch. These weapons of mass destruction were used against targets in mainland Europe and also the UK particularly in the south east and London. FourV1s landed in Northamptonshire including one in the village of Creaton. However in peacetime development of the V2 in the USA was the basis for the Saturn V rocket which took man to the moon in 1969.
